Race Day Events
Turkey Trot 5k Run/Walk &10k Run (9:00am)
This race was primarily designed for people aged 10-70+ (our awards categories are based on this age grouping) and is a general participant race. When you register you can choose to either run or walk the 5k race course or if you are looking for a greater challenge you can run the 10k course. Both the 5k and 10k races start at 9:00am. This is a great run to do with your whole family! We have runners of all ages, skill levels and strength do this event. We encourage our power walkers and those who would like to be out walking their babies in their strollers to join in the fun as well. If you do have children ages 2-9 who aren’t ready for such a long race please see the Lucille Packard Kid’s Fun Run below. Men and Women’s First place winners get prizes, a commemorative trophy and a first place medal, Men and Women’s Second and Third place get place medals in the following age categories: 10-14, 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70+.
The cost of this race is $25 until Oct 15, $30 from Oct 16-Nov 21 and $35 to register on the day of the event.
SAP CEO/Celebrity Charity
Challenge (9:00am)
This race is sponsored by SAP Company and takes place at the same time as the general participant race above, it follows the same 5k course that the general participants are competing in and is designed to be a charity challenge for local CEO’s, Elected Officials, and Celebrities. If you are a CEO or Elected Official who likes to help out local charities we have designed series of donations levels. You choose the level that works best for you: a $90 basic, a $250 Bronze, a $500 Silver or a $1,000 Gold entry fee level donation which goes directly to the 3 benefiting charities. The winners will be determined by the following age categories: 39 and under and 40 and above. Men and Women’s First place winners get prizes, a commemorative trophy and a first place medal. Men and Women’s Second and Third place get place medals. We will have massage therapists on hand to help relax your muscles after your run. You can contribute to this fabulous charity event and help make a difference in our community.
VMware "Can Do" Community Challenge
This is a new event for the Applied Materials Silicon Valley Turkey Trot. VMware would like to “challenge” everyone who is coming out on Thanksgiving Day to help make a difference in the lives of those people who don’t have enough food for their family. We are asking every race participant to bring 10 pounds of canned food out to the race venue to make sure that everyone can have a happy Thanksgiving!

EMC Fittest Firm Contest (9:00am)
This race is sponsored by EMC2 Corporation and takes place at the same time as the general participant race above. This race follows the same 5k course that the general participants are competing in and is designed to be a competition for local companies to see how many people they can get to come out and run. Friends and Family count in this contest! There are four size categories so that every company can come out and participate. The qualifying size categories are as follows: extra small company is 1-20 employees, small company is 21-99 employees, Medium Company is 100-499 employees and a large company is 500 or more employees. The number of employees currently working at the company determines your competition size category and then within each size category it is which company can get the most people to come out and participate in the run (again friends and family count!). Your company can win a deluxe box suite for your group at for a local sporting event. We have received generous in-kind donations from the SF Giants, SF 49ers, Oakland A’s and the San Jose Sharks!
Kaiser Permanente/Pacific Association/USATF Open Women's 5K Championship ($2,500 Prize Purse, 10:25am)
This race is sponsored by Kaiser Permanente and is for Pacific Association USA Track and Field registered athletes. This is a 5K race in which some of the world’s best Female runners come to compete for prizes and try to break a world record. The 5K course is a 3 lap loop that starts the runners out at St. John street then making a right onto Almaden Blvd, making a right onto Santa Clara Street, then a right onto Autumn street (Past HP Pavilion) and finishing with a right turn back onto St. John. Participants can see these world class runners at their finest as they loop around the Turkey Trot Festival area. This race happens after the general participant run. The PA USATF Women will run at the same time as the Women’s Seagate Elite Invitational. There is a cash prize purse of $2,500 for this race and Women’s First place winners get a high performance t-shirt, an Applied Materials Turkey Trot baseball cap, a commemorative trophy and a first place medal, Women’s Second and Third place get place medals. The Official PA/USATF Grand Prix divisions are Open Women 39 and under, Masters Women 40-49, Senior Women 50-59, Super Senior Women 60-69, and veteran Women 70+.The cost of this race is $25 until Oct 16, $30 from Oct 16-Nov 21 and $35 to register on the day of the event. Award winners must be Pacific Association USATF members. Prize money is awarded Pacific Association USATF Members only.
Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Kids Fun Run (11:05am)
This race is sponsored by Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital and is probably one of the most endearing events of the Applied Materials Silicon Valley Turkey Trot. We have 4 age categories for this race 2-4, 5-6, 7-8 and 9 years old. This race takes place at 11:00am. Kids 2-3 run/walk a 110 yard or about 1/16th of a mile straight away. They start at one end and finish at the other end. Kids 4-5 run/walk the straight away up and back which is about 220 yards or 1/8th of a mile. They start and finish at the same end. Kid’s 6-7 run the straight away up and back 2 times which is about 440 yards or 1/4th mile. They start and finish at the same end. Kids 8-9 years old run the straight away up and back 3 times which is about 660 yards or a little more than 1/3rd mile. They start and finish at the same end. Every child who participates gets a kid’s Fun Run specially designed t-shirt, a medal and goodie bag. Boys and Girl’s First, Second and Third place finishers in each of the age categories (2-4, 5-6, 7-8, 9) will also receive a commemorative baseball hat and award certificate acknowledging their first, second or third place win.
Santa Clara Valley National Bank/Pacific Association/USATF Open Men's 5K Championship ($2,500 Prize Purse, 10:45am)
This race is sponsored Santa Clara Valley National Bank and is for USA Track and Field registered athletes. This is a 5K race in which some of the world’s best Male runners come to compete for prizes and try to break a world record. The 5K course is a flat and fast 4-lap loop that starts the runners out at St. John street then making a right onto Almaden Blvd, making a right onto Santa Clara Street, then a right onto Autumn street (Past HP Pavilion) and finishing with a right turn back onto St. John. Participants can see these world class runners at their finest as they loop around the Turkey Trot Festival area. This race happens after the general participant run. The PA USATF Men will run at the same time as the Men’s Seagate Elite Invitational.
There is a PA/USATF 5K Open Men’s Championship prize purse of $2,500 for top PA/USATF individuals and
clubs, Men’s First place winners get high performance t-shirt, an Applied Materials Turkey Trot baseball cap, a commemorative trophy and a first place medal, Men’s Second and Third place get place medals in the following age categories: 10-14, 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70+. Seagate Elite Athlete Invitational (women 10:25am, men 10:45am)
This race is sponsored Seagate Technology and is by invitation only. This is a 5K race in which some of the world’s best Male and Female runners come to compete for prizes and try to break a world record. The 5K course is a 3 lap loop that starts the runners out at St John and making a right onto Almaden Blvd, making a right onto Santa Clara Street, then a right onto Autumn street (Past HP Pavilion) and finishing with a right back onto St. John. Participants can see these world class runners at their finest as they loop around the Turkey Trot Festival area. This race happens after the general participant run. The women will run at the same time as the Kaiser Permanente PA USATF Open Women’s championship race. The men will run after the women’s race and will take place at the same time as the PA USATF Open Men’s 5k Championship race. Men and Women’s First place winners get prizes, a commemorative trophy and a first place medal, Men and Women’s Second and Third place get place medals. The age categories are as follows: 18 and under, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80-84, 85-89, 90+.

Quickest Cop/ Fastest Fire Fighter 5K
This race is sponsored by KB Home and takes place at the same time as the general participant race above, it follows the same 5k course that the general participants are competing in and is designed to be a charity challenge for the local Fire Fighters and the Local Law Enforcement agencies (Police, Sheriff, Firefighters and District Attorneys). These special community service members work hard to keep San Jose safe for all of us and this is their opportunity to come out and have some fun. If you are a Fire Fighter, Police Officer, Sheriff or DA who likes to help out local charities we have designed this contest for you. Friends and Family count in this contest! Men and Women’s First place winners get prizes, a commemorative trophy and a first place medal, Men and Women’s Second and Third place get place medals. The following age categories will be used to determine 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishers: 39 and younger and 40 and above.
Tri-Club/Running Club Challenge
The Tri-Club/Running Club Challenge is a 10K race to determine who is the fastest club in the Northern California. Help your club earn the bragging rights to being the fastest club in the Bay Area.
Overall Combined Award
Every member has the oppportunity to score points towards this award. Prizes will be awarded for the first through third place teams.
Scoring System
Team Finishing Points - Maximum 20 points per team as long as 20 members cross the finish line.
- If a team has less than 20 members racing, they will receive a total number of finishing points based on how many members cross the finish line.
- If a team has more than 20 members racing, as long as 20 members cross the finish line, the team receives 20 points (max.) If less than 20 members cross the finish line, they will only receive the total number of points of those who cross the finish line.
Additional Team Points - This is where "every" member has the potential to score points for their respective team. The participant must be registered as racing in the NorCal Club Championship and must place in the Top 10 of their age group.
Additional points will be scored as follows:
- 1st Place Age Group - 10 points
- 2nd Place 9 points
- 3rd Place 8 points
- ...etc., all the way through 10th place.
Individual age group awards are earned against the whole age group, not just the club competition. Overall club award is won by the largest number of points. Fastest Club Award is the fastest accumulated time of the fastest 3 men and the fastest 3 women.
